VIRGIN TERRITORY / ONE MAN TENT
‘First time offered, down to earth practicality and mobility
of lifestyle are proposed in this well groomed, modest one room abode.
Features include diaphanous screening and easy front and rear access.’
The title, Virgin Territory – One-man Tent (plate 9)
comments on the connection between marriage, monogamy and mobility ‘easy
access’ of sexual favour is gained through the front and back zipper that
remains open around the genital area. Mobility and lack of permanence are
alluded to through the choice of the tent as a type of home. Choosing a tent
as a style of architecture adorning a 1950’s female form satirizes the
idealism of the ‘new lifestyle’. A lifestyle which encourages viewing the
world as full of endless choices, advocating such things as multiple careers
and legitimizing serial monogamy, which can only engender a general loss of
the narrative of permanence.
